History

The Meenakshi Amman Temple, built largely between the 13th and 17th centuries, is the sacred heart of Madurai and one of the largest temple complexes in India. Its 14 gopurams, some 50 metres high, carry tens of thousands of painted figures, while the Hall of a Thousand Pillars holds exquisite sculpture. Each evening the deity's image is paraded to the temple's holy tank in a beloved ceremony.
