Fatehpur Sikri

History

Emperor Akbar built Fatehpur Sikri between 1571 and 1585 to honour the Sufi saint Salim Chishti, whose shrine stands in the palace courtyard. The city served as the Mughal capital for barely fourteen years before being abandoned for lack of water, leaving its palaces, courtyards, and the famous Panch Mahal largely intact — a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture frozen in time.
