Khajuraho Temples

History

The Khajuraho group of monuments, built by the Chandela dynasty between 950 and 1050 CE, originally numbered 85 temples; about 20 survive. Carved from sandstone without mortar, they are celebrated for their erotic sculpture, but the majority of the work depicts gods, goddesses, musicians, dancers, and scenes of daily life. The Kandariya Mahadeva and Lakshmana temples are masterpieces of north Indian architecture.
