History
Kashi Vishwanath is dedicated to Vishwanath, "Lord of the Universe", one of the twelve jyotirlingas of Shiva and the holiest shrine in Varanasi. The current gold-plated spires date from 1780, built by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. Hindu belief holds that dying in the city it guards grants moksha, liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
