History
The Gateway of India was completed in 1924 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911, the first reigning British monarchs to set foot in India. The 26-metre arch, built in Indo-Saracenic style on the Apollo Bunder, later gained fame as the point through which the last British troops departed in 1948. It is the busiest public square in Mumbai.
