Ellora Caves

History

Ellora, a UNESCO site, is a single 2-kilometre basalt cliff carved between the 5th and 10th centuries into 34 caves of three faiths: Buddhist monasteries and shrines, vast Hindu temples, and Jain sanctums standing side by side. The crowning work is the Kailasa Temple, Cave 16, carved top-down from the rock into a free-standing temple twice the size of the Parthenon.
