History
The Charminar, "four minarets", was built in 1591 by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah to mark the founding of Hyderabad and the end of a plague. Its 56-metre arches frame the bazaars of Laad Bazaar, famous for pearls and bangles, and its mosque on the top floor still functions. It remains the most recognisable symbol of the city.
