History

The Bhimbetka rock shelters, 45 kilometres from Bhopal, hold the earliest traces of human life in South Asia — over 700 shelters with paintings dating back to the Stone Age. The red, white, and green pigments depict animals, hunting scenes, dancers, and everyday life in continuous layers across thousands of years. A UNESCO site since 2003, it is the definitive window into prehistoric India.
