History

The Bara Imambara, built in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula during a famine to provide employment, was a public granary, mosque, and congregation hall for Muharram in one. Its central hall, 50 metres long and 15 high, is one of the largest arched chambers in the world, unsupported by pillars. Above it sprawls the Bhulbhulaiya, a labyrinth of over a thousand identical passages.
