History

The Ajanta Caves, 30 rock-cut Buddhist monuments built between the 2nd century BCE and the 6th century CE, were carved over seven centuries and then lost to the jungle until rediscovered in 1819. Their murals and sculptures are masterpieces of Buddhist art, depicting the life of the Buddha and Jataka tales with extraordinary colour and grace. The caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
