Gangtok

Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, balances a relaxed modern town with deep Buddhist heritage. The Rumtek Monastery, the huge statue of Guru Padmasambhava, and the view from the Ganesh Tok ridge make it a rewarding base. From here, travellers continue to Tsomgo Lake and, with permits, the Nathu La pass on the China border at 4,310 metres.
