Amritsar
Amritsar is the spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh faith. The Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), surrounded by the sacred pool Amrit Sarovar, glows gold at sunrise and is open to people of every faith — everyone is fed for free in its vast langar kitchen. A short drive away, the Jallianwala Bagh memorial remembers the 1919 massacre, and every evening the Beating Retreat at the Wagah Border draws crowds from both sides of India-Pakistan.
