History
The Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya marks the very spot where, around 528 BCE, Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree. The current 50-metre brick and stone temple dates mainly from the 5th-6th centuries CE, with a descendant of the original tree growing in its courtyard. A UNESCO site, it is the most sacred pilgrimage place in Buddhism.
